April 17th - Fisher, Jack, Sam, and Lennie, Batman photo booth (1).JPG

batman themed

party

Quarantine birthday #2!  Our son Sam turned three in April, and we planned a Batman themed party for him, complete with a photo booth, a bat fight, cookie decorating, face painting, an obstacle course, and batman karaoke!

Gotham City Photo Booth and Giant Dark Knight Balloon

Fisher and Jack made Sam this awesome Gotham City photo booth backdrop! We started with a large piece of cardboard (If you go to an appliance store, they usually have refrigerator boxes that they’ll give you), and then the boys drew large rectangles (varying the heights) for the buildings. Fisher added a moon to the sky. Next, they used varying shades of gray acrylic paint to fill in each building. We let it dry for about 10 minutes, and then painted the entire sky using blue acrylic paint (mixed with a little black to make it look like it was nighttime). When the buildings completely dried, they used black and yellow paint to add the windows by using a square paintbrush. We added a little white to the yellow paint because the white makes it more opaque so it covers a little better. They painted the moon with white paint mixed with a little yellow, and then I added the Batman light in the sky. We used our Cricut to cut out the props (and added glitter to the Joker’s).

You can find the giant Batman balloon that we ordered here.

Batman Cheese & Cookies

My plan for a party activity/snack was to have the boys decorate Batman cookies, so I ordered a cookie cutter to cut out the bat shape from the dough…just a tip: look at a ruler when ordering something that you need to be a specific size…2 inches in my head seemed so much bigger than in reality, and when I received the cookie cutter in the mail, it was clearly WAY too small for cookies. By that time, it was too late to order a new one, so I had to cut a bat symbol from cardstock using the Cricut, and then cut each cookie out by hand by tracing that template with an x-acto knife. Here is a set of cookie cutters that you CAN use for cookies though! On a positive note, I ended up using the small 2 inch cutter to cut cheese (Sam’s favorite food) into bat symbol shapes!

Batman Party Activities

The activities for this party included:

  • Face painting - We just used black face paint and a small paintbrush to paint a bat on each boy’s face.

  • Batman karaoke - The boys received a karaoke machine for Christmas, so we blasted the Batman theme while they sang into the microphone…SUPER easy and simple, but they loved it!

  • Pin the bat on Batman - We folded a piece of large black paper in half, drew half of a very simple Batman silhouette shape onto the folded side, and then cut it out to get a nice symmetrical Batman shape. This was taped to the wall, and we used the Cricut to cut out several bat symbols out of yellow paper. The boys took turns being blindfolded and tried to place the symbol on Batman.

  • Inflatable bat fight - We bought these inflatable bats on Amazon, dressed the boys in capes, blasted the bat theme in the backyard, and let them go to town hitting each other with the inflatable bats. This may have been their favorite activity of the party! The bats we bought did lose air quickly though…these may be better?

  • Obstacle course - We bought black streamers at the dollar store, taped them at varying heights and angles down our hallway, and the boys had to get through them and down the hall without ripping any down! Again, VERY cheap and easy, but lots of fun!
